If repayment income < $54,435: repayment = $0. Otherwise apply the ATO threshold band: income × rate for the band. Bands: $54,435–$62,849 at 1.0%; $62,850–$66,619 at 2.0%; $66,620–$70,618 at 2.5%; $70,619–$74,855 at 3.0%; $74,856–$79,347 at 3.5%; $79,348–$83,241 at 4.0%; $83,242–$87,580 at 4.5%; $87,581–$91,980 at 5.0%; $91,981–$96,640 at 5.5%; $96,641–$101,899 at 6.0%; $101,900–$107,214 at 6.5%; $107,215–$112,585 at 7.0%; $112,586–$118,119 at 7.5%; $118,120–$123,861 at 8.0%; $123,862–$129,825 at 8.5%; $129,826–$135,630 at 9.0%; $135,631–$141,848 at 9.5%; above $141,849 at 10.0%. 1. For $75,000 repayment income: falls in the $74,856–$79,347 band at 3.5%. Annual repayment = $75,000 × 3.5% = $2,625. Fortnightly = $101.00. Weekly = $50.48. With a $28,000 debt and no indexation, estimated years to repay ≈ 10.7 years.

Assumptions

  • Rates reflect the 2024-25 ATO HELP repayment income thresholds.
  • HELP debt is indexed to CPI on 1 June each year. This calculator does not model future indexation — years-to-repay is an estimate only.
  • Repayment income includes taxable income plus reportable fringe benefits plus total net investment loss — it is not the same as your salary or gross income.
  • Voluntary repayments are not modelled. They reduce the debt immediately without bonus (the 5% bonus was removed from 1 January 2022).

Professional note

Master's Tip: your employer withholds HELP repayments through the tax system based on your income. Print the repayment income (not salary), repayment rate and annual amount for your own records and to check against your PAYG withholding variation.

Regional and unit assumptions

Assumptions and limitations

Trust boundary

What this calculator does NOT do

  • VSL (Vocational Student Loans) — separate threshold tables apply
  • New Zealand citizens living in Australia — different HELP rules apply
  • Calculating exact tax withholding — use the ATO's tax withheld calculator for PAYG purposes
  • Confirming your actual HELP debt balance — use myGov ATO online services

When to stop using this calculator

  • If your HELP debt is over $100,000 — consider a voluntary repayment strategy with your tax agent before the June indexation date
  • If you have multiple HELP loan types — verify the combined balance in myGov rather than estimating
